Tri-province fest opens in Yen Bai City

A grand opening ceremony for the spring festival Hanh Trinh Ve Coi Nguon Journey to the Roots in north-western provinces Yen Bai, Phu Tho and Lao Cai, is to take the stage in Yen Bai City today.
The initial fun-packed event, titled Hidden Colours, will be broadcast live on national television, channel 1. The programme features music performances, a carnival and traditional markets of local ethnic people. Visitors will also get the chance to see the 1 tonne record-breaking xoi ngu sac (steamed glutinous rice with five colours), which was made in Yen Bai earlier this week.
Xoi ngu sac is a speciality of Yen Bai's people, famous for its white, red, yellow, green and purple colours, created by the use of different types of leaves.
The steamed glutinous rice was made on Monday and will be on display until tomorrow.
The idea was cooked up by the provincial tourist department which also covers two other northern provinces; Phu Tho and Lao Cai.
Tourists are being encouraged to use the festival as a stepping stone to explore other sightseeing delights the mountainous region has to offer.
Highlights include the 2,330 ha of rice fields in Muong Lo Valley, Van Chan District or the hot mineral streams near Hoc Village or Bon Village, about 10km away from the district's centre, Nghia Lo Town.
The event is aimed at promoting the area's scenic landscape to tourists. It is currently in its third year.
